We got the terrible news last week that the University of Dundee are planning to cut the undergraduate philosophy programme and lay off two of its six permament staff members. I’ve only been working at Dundee less than a year, but I’ve never felt more at home. The philosophy programme is doing something absolutely unique in the UK, and maybe the world. Continental philosophy for me is at the heart of the environmental humanities; you can’t open up a book or an article on the subject without encountering its major thinkers. Depriving future generations of students of the ability to learn from these thinkers in shaping their own thoughts about the nonhuman world around them is an absolute loss, no matter what the temporary financial gain to the university.
